what’s the issue:

what do you encounter with students and addiction
a. when they come in our office, they don’t always come in saying that they have an addiction problem. It’s usually individuals coming in that are having academic issues. And when we probe further into their crisis substance use comes into play quite often (00;01;18;16) Out

(00:01:27:00) In
we are seeing addiction related issues that trigger a lot of issues that take let’s say a student away from their academic studies and at that point we adress and see how we can help them with their addiction 5(00:01:42:02)Out

why are students so prown to addiction

(00:01.45:08) In
we live in a society right now that, substance addiction is gosh, so available
(00:01.54:17) Out

(02.11:19) In
For instance, Marijuana. You can get that so easily. It takes probably 20 minutes to make that call and have it delivered right into your hand. So it’s the availability
(02.27:16) Out

what addictions are see in schools

(04.57;28) In
But it’s when it becomes a controlling factor in ones life that they can’t seem to break away from. When the area that they are addicted to controls them instead of them controlling whatever they are involved in.
(05.11:03)

Why turn to addiction?

(05.28:08)
That’s a good question. I think its all about managing and coping. A lot of the times, students will self medicate. They may be going through a lot of mental health issues, they may be depressed, hey may be going through family issues. It’s almost like a way of medicating, or self medicating to cope and manage what their going through or the crisis that their involved in
(06.01:16) Out

(06.03:01) In
To sort of phase out from reality or a painful situation by medicating through substances is a lot easier than try to sort of fix things when there may not be an easy solution. It’s almost like a quick fix for the students as a way they drown out their sorrow, my pain my issue for an hour, two hours

How hard is it to battle an addiction for a student

(07.01:13)In
But bottom line is it’s battling, you know whether their battling within themselves or their parents , their battling with financial issues, there always this turmoil that individuals are confronted with and most of the time, i mean, there no peace in their life.
(07.24:08)

(07.45;14) In
when they don’t have support or help, um and they battle it alone, sometimes its an ongoing battle which may lead to destruction
(07.54;13)Out

(09.20:06)
For instance, an average drug habbit for some of these kids is up to 100 dollars a week. Thats alot of money. When they finally become aware, maybe they realize, you know what, I may be addicted
(09.36:21) Out

(09.36;29)
Alot of the students that come in and no, I can drive when i’m stoned, i can maintain my grades when I’m stoned, I can function in class when I’m stoned, and then I ask why are you in here. what can help

(10.38:20)
we’ve got phyciatrysts we can refer them to, we have rehab centers to refer them to , doctors and physicians, but the most important way to get help is for them to say that they are out of control, I need help and I’m here to get help, which ever way I can get the help.

(11.32;21)
In an academic institution, even though were here to study, I mean there is a lot of drug involvement going on. People will distribute, sell, use. Its a way to make quick money, its a way to finance.

(12.06:09)
A lot of people are using to cope with their high, stressful life but I think there are other avenues
